Effect of wildfire on soil physical and chemical properties in a Nothofagus glauca forest, Chile RChHN
LITTON,CREIGHTON M.; SANTELICES,RÓMULO.
Effects of a wildfire on soil chemical and physical properties in a Nothofagus glauca (Phil.) Krasser forest in the Coastal Mountain Range of south-central Chile were investigated. Response of the soil during the first two years following a wildfire was examined, where data from soil in a burned forest were compared to that in an adjacent, unburned stand. The effects that wildfire have on soil properties in this highly fragmented ecosystem are not well understood, but results from this study suggest similar responses to those found in other mediterranean forest systems. Both physical (bulk density, percent soil moisture, and soil organic matter content) and chemical properties (exchangeable inorganic nitrogen, extractable phosphorus, exchangeable...

Establishing management zones using soil electrical conductivity and other soil properties by the fuzzy clustering technique Scientia Agricola
Molin,José Paulo; Castro,Cesar Nunes de.
The design of site-specific management zones that can successfully define uniform regions of soil fertility attributes that are of importance to crop growth is one of the most challenging steps in precision agriculture. One important method of so proceeding is based solely on crop yield stability using information from yield maps; however, it is possible to accomplish this using soil information. In this study the soil was sampled for electrical conductivity and eleven other soil properties, aiming to define uniform site-specific management zones in relation to these variables. Principal component analysis was used to group variables and fuzzy logic classification was used for clustering the transformed variables. The importance of electrical conductivity...

Santos, Fábio Lúcio; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Jesus, Valquíria Aparecida Mendes de; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Valente, Domingos Sárvio Magalhães; Universidade Federal de Viçosa.
An important factor for the evaluation of an agricultural system’s sustainability is the monitoring of soil quality via its physical attributes. The physical attributes of soil, such as soil penetration resistance, can be used to monitor and evaluate the soil’s quality. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been employed to solve many problems in agriculture, and the use of this technique can be considered an alternative approach for predicting the penetration resistance produced by the soil’s basic properties, such as bulk density and water content. The aim of this work is to perform an analysis of the soil penetration resistance behavior measured from the cone index under different levels of bulk density and water content using statistical analyses,...

Andrade,Carolyne W. L. de; Montenegro,Suzana M. G. L.; Miranda,Jarbas H. de; Montenegro,Abelardo A. de A.; Assis,Fred M. C. V. de.
ABSTRACT The application of chemical substances to the soil together with little attention given to the possible environmental impacts, transformed the environment into a recipient of waste. The aim of this study was to simulate the movement of water and solutes (sodium and potassium together) using the STANMOD and HYDRUS-2D models in a typical Haplic Planosol under the application of wastewater via surface irrigation under different flow rates. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory by miscible displacement tests, first using columns with deformed soil under saturation and steady water flow conditions, at a rate of 11.7 cm3 min-1, to obtain transport parameters of sodium and potassium ions, and in the applied residual water, the values of 475 and...

Site index and soil properties in young plantations of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla in Southeastern Mexico Agrociencia
Delgado-Caballero,Carina E.; Gómez-Guerrero,Armando; Valdez-Lazalde,José R.; De los Santos-Posadas,Hector; Fierros-González,Aurelio M.; Horwath,William R..
Research on the ability of tropical soils to support fast-growing forests species is required to optimize, preserve and select lands for timber production. In this work site index (SI) of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla plantations in Southeastern Mexico, was related to chemical and physical soil properties. Based on a joint model of SI vs. sand content, the fit suggests that SI improves as the sand content increases (p<0.01). Sand content of 28% in the surface soil (0-5 cm) and 24% in the sub-surface soil (5-30 cm) is a desired minimum for establishing highly productive stands. The best SI conditions were found on sandy soils with a sand content of 65 %. Other variables, such as soil bulk density, N mineralization and organic matter were also...

Soil structure degradation in patches of alfalfa fields Scientia Agricola
Miretti,María Celeste; Imhoff,Silvia; Silva,Alvaro Pires da; Lavado,Raúl.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is the basic forage resource for milk production in the flat Pampa of the Santa Fe Province of Argentina. However, the presence of microrelief with patches threatens the expansion of the area cultivated with alfalfa. The lower productivity in the patches is attributed to the inferior soil physical quality. The objectives of this study were to quantify indicators of soil physical quality and to establish the soil properties that would affect the alfalfa productivity in patches (PA) and normal areas (NA). Additionally, the macro and micro nutrient contents in both areas were determined. The experiment was carried out on an Aquic Argiudoll. Eighteen sampling sites, nine in NA and nine in PA were established. At each site, undisturbed...

Temporal changes of an alfalfa succession and related soil physical properties on the Loess Plateau, China PAB
She,Dong Li; Shao,Ming An; Timm,Luis Carlos; Reichardt,Klaus.
The objective of this work was to investigate the relationship between changes in the plant community and changes in soil physical properties and water availability, during a succession from alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to natural vegetation on the Loess Plateau, China. Data from a succession sere spanning 32 years were collated, and vegetative indexes were compared to changes related to soil bulk density and soil water storage. The alfalfa yield increased for approximately 7 years, then it declined and the alfalfa was replaced by a natural community dominated by Stipa bungeana that began to thrive about 10 years after alfalfa seeding. Soil bulk density increased over time, but the deterioration of the alfalfa was mainly ascribed to a severe reduction in...
